Measurements
6’8″  223 lbs  7’3″ wingspan  20 years old

Projectable Skills

  • Strength/Length – Hybrid build, has drastically reshaped his body from freshman to sophomore season. Good functional strength, plays physical. Long 7’3″ wingspan, surprises opponents with length.
  • Intensity – Plays with a chip on his shoulder, isn’t afraid of competition. High level of confidence, infuses games with energy.
  • Scoring Versatility – Much improved all around player this season, shows the ability to stretch the floor (43.9% from deep on 2.2 attempts/game), can attack close outs/straight line drive, soft touch around the basket, working on improving floater touch. Increased stamina allows his motor to run hot for longer and get out in transition. Generates mis-matches. Rated as good or very good in transition, P/R, post-ups, and spot-ups according to Synergy.
  • Scoring Production – Averaging 14.1 pts/game, taking more shots and producing down the stretch of the season. Hasn’t scored in single digits since mid-January.
  • Athleticism – Not an elite athlete by any metric, but solid all around the board (quickness, burst, verticality). Has quickness to drive past slower footed bigs, can elevate with time/space for rebounds and lobs. Above average athlete, projects to handle the NBA.
  • Rebounding – Averaging 8.0 rebs/game in 28.6 mins/game, has improved from 5.7 rebs/game in similar mins his freshman season (2.6 O rebs/game). Good nose for the ball, tough player to box out, uses length/strength to keep balls alive. Can get off the floor quicker this season.
  • Role Player Potential – Has upside to be a high level role player in the NBA. Relatively high floor, should be able to thrive in defined role. Shows leadership skills, has some alpha dog in him, but can play alongside top players and thrive.
  • BBIQ/Feel – Plays under control, knows how to get to his spots and capitalize. Improving ability to survey the floor and make quick decisions.
  • Defensive Production – Strong post defender, uses length to disrupt shots/passing lanes. Quick hands, strong base, tough player to move around the block. Improved ability to cover P/R and isolation situations. Upside as an energy defender.

Improvement Areas

  • Passing Ability – Basic level passer at this stage, averaging a 1:1 AST:TO ratio.  Could improve ability to pass from the post/on the move, can get tunnel vision when attacking.
  • Dribbling Diversity – More of a straight line driver at this stage, could add some basic counter moves off the bounce. Adding a small step-back off the dribble would help open the floor. Rated as a below average (24th percentile, 0.611 PPP) isolation player via Synergy.
  • Perimeter Defense – Improved lateral agility from last season, but may struggle containing NBA players on the perimeter. Lacks elite level quick-twitch athleticism.
  • Offensive Polish – Rated as an average (50th percentile) around the basket player, has soft touch, but could improve his ability to finish over longer defenders.

Potential Questions/Concerns

  • How legit is his outside shot? How efficiently will it transfer to the NBA line?

Write Up
PJ Washington tested the draft waters last year and made the correct decision to reshape his body/game during the off-season and return to Kentucky for his Sophomore year as he now looks like a sure-fire 1st round pick. His new leaner build combined with his improved stroke have made him a much more well-rounded prospect as he can stretch the floor and play physical in the post. Washington has high role player potential and projects to be a versatile offensive player/productive rebounder in the NBA. His upside may be lower than other one and done freshman in the draft, but he makes up for it with a high floor and projectable skills. Overall, Washington has a nice combination of skills/intangibles and is one of my favorite bang for buck prospects in the draft.
