Projectable Skills

  • Size/Length – Good NBA build/body, has size to play/defend multiple positions. Broad shoulders, balanced frame, functional strength. Long 7’2″ wingspan.
  • Athleticism – Not elite at any one thing, but explosive off 2 feet, solid burst/quickness. Can change speeds well within the half court. Good athlete by NBA standards.
  • Defensive versatility – Excellent defender, switchable, fundamentally sound. Uses length to disrupt passing lanes/shot attempts. Quick hands/feet, possesses the lateral quickness and strength to cover 1-4 on a consistent basis.
  • Shooting/Scoring – Improved all around scorer this season (+6 pts/game this season), has improved efficiency with more looks. Can score inside/outside, shooting 44.6% on 3 pt attempts (2.7 attempts/game). Rated as an excellent overall offensive player (88th percentile) via Synergy. Much improved shot diversity.
  • Fundamentals – Sound player, good footwork, able to get square quickly, smooth shot mechanics. Fairly crafty, uses jab steps/ball fakes to generate space. Good foundation to build upon.
  • Creating/Playmaking upside – Improve handle this season, slowly expanding dribbling diversity outside of straight line drives. Ball handling doesn’t appear to drastically limit fludity/athleticism. Still needs to improve, but shows flashes of creating off the bounce. Has upside as a low-key playmaker, excellent (98th percentile) as a P/R ball-handler, plus AST:TO ratio (1.5 AST:TO ratio), smart/calculated passer.
  • BBIQ/Feel – Smart player, moves well without the ball, limits his mistakes, safe/reliable player on the court. Good job scoring within the flow of the game, doesn’t force a ton of shots.
  • Role player potential – Projects to be a useful/valuable player due to physical tools/skill level, fits in the modern NBA. Doesn’t demand the ball, can play alongside good players, fits majority of NBA systems. Has some high level upside as well, reserved player off the court, but has a quiet confidence/toughness about him.

Improvement Areas

  • Dribbling ability – Could continue to tighten handle, improving diversity, but more of a basic level creator at this stage. Not a major concern, but needs to improve if he’s to become more versatile in the NBA.
  • Rebounding – Solid rebounder at 5.0 rebs/game, but could improve. Has had more 1 rebound games (3 total) than double digit rebound games (2 total). Has the athleticism/length to be better, should improve over time.
  • Offensive polish – Improving in all areas of his game, primarily needs more reps/continued development. Could speed up decision making, shot mechanics, refine his handle/court awareness, etc. Foundation is there, but will become more polished with added time/reps.
  • Shooting diversity – More of a catch and shoot player at this stage, needs time to get set/lineup shot. Slowly improving his pull-up ability, but not much of a threat as a shooter off the bounce/screens.
  • Offensive versatility – Expanding perimeter skills, played more of a PF at Virginia, projects to be a hybrid SF/PF in the NBA, but needs to continue rounding out perimeter skill set if he’s to become more of a reliable SF offensively.

Potential Questions/Concerns

  • Can he develop into an efficient NBA SF?
  • How high is his ceiling as a prospect?

Write Up
DeAndre Hunter is an interesting prospect, he’s a long/athletic combo forward who fits the modern NBA.  He’s fundamentally sound for a prospect his age (sophomore) and has showcased much more offensive diversity this season. Defensively, Hunter has the length/foot speed to defend multiple positions and projects to be a valuable defender at the NBA level. From an overall standpoint, Hunter grades out well offensively/defensively according to Synergy, while his defense lives up to the hype, he’s not necessarily great at any one thing offensively.  He shows flashes of doing a bit of everything, but it’s been a slow growing process getting to where he’s at now (older prospect at 21 years old).  The biggest thing Hunter needs at this stage is more reps, it’d be beneficial for him to go to a situation where other offensive players are in place and he can focus on defense and growing his game. Overall, Hunter projects to be a valuable defensive role player who can play alongside other star players and fit nicely within multiple team concepts and in this draft that’s worth a top 5-7 pick.
