Projectable Skills

  • Size/Strength/Length – Listed at 6’5″, but looks noticeably bigger, has a good frame, NBA size/length.
  • Role Player Upside – Does a good job playing within himself, can fit next to a variety of player types.
  • Athleticism – More of a fluid athlete, deceptive speed, snakes past defenders, can elevate when has time/space.
  • Shooting Upside – Improving as a shooter (36.5% career 3pt%), nice footwork on step-backs.
  • Finishing Ability – Good body control/creativity, uses length to get clean looks. Shooting 60.9% around the rim via Synergy.
  • Defensive Ability/Upside – Laterally quick, uses length to get big/disrupt passing lanes. Projects to be a versatile defender in NBA.
  • Creating/Playmaking – Can put the ball on the floor and generate his own offense, upside as a secondary/tertiary playmaker. Flashes ability to make incredible passes, averaging 3.6 asts/game.
  • Rebounding – Solid rebounder, averaging 6.2 rebs/game. Has speed to chase down long boards and length/athleticism to be active around the basket.
  • Off-Ball Ability – Plays well off the ball, projectable 3+D wing, moves well within the half court offense, upside as a cutter. Fills a lane in transition.
  • High Character – Basketball junkie, watches film and studies the game. Hard worker, has stepped up as Texas Tech’s top player this season, filling the void of Zhaire Smith.

Improvement Areas

  • Quickness/Burst – Lacks elite level quickness, struggles to generate space/blow by defenders, ends up settling for tough/contested looks.
  • Verticality – Not overly vertical, more of a hybrid floor bound player. May struggle to elevate/finish in the paint against NBA length.
  • Forces Shots – Connected to lack of quickness, but tends to settle for poor outside looks at times.
  • Loose handle – Upside as a creator, not a major concern, but could tighten his handle, can be slow in crossover moves, limits his athleticism.
  • Shot mechanics – Has hitch in his shot, slower release, needs extra time to get shot off in pull-up situations. Not totally broken, just needs refining.
  • Runners/Floaters – Shows flashes of soft touch, but not in his shot arsenal currently. Needs to expand this area of his game, shooting 33.3% on 15 total attempts so far this season.

Potential Questions/Concerns

  • How efficient can he become as a knockdown shooter?
  • How much will he be able to create off the bounce/get to his spots against NBA defenders?
  • How much of an offensive project is he?

Write Up

Jarrett Culver has made the sophomore jump this season and has done a nice job filling the void left behind from Zhaire Smith. He’s improved in nearly all facets of his game in terms of production/efficiency with increased minutes and usage. At this stage he projects to be a versatile defensive wing who shows the ability to shoot from the outside and create/playmake off the bounce. He’s still somewhat of a raw prospect offensively whose still learning how to best use his tools/skill-set, but he has a good foundation and the work ethic to capitalize on his talent. Overall he projects to be a cost efficient role player with upside who could fit on a variety of rosters.
